Yes, a new key or remote has to be programmed to your car before it works. How depends on the year and trim: on some you do it yourself at the car with a short sequence of key turns and button presses (the steps come with it, no tool, no cost); on others a locksmith or dealer connects a programming tool. Bring every key you want to keep using when the new one is programmed. On many cars programming clears any key that isn’t there at the time.
